Rhetorical attacks on equal rights

In the analysis presented below, the three-country-corpus has been scrutinised for proposals that are meant to infringe migrants’ rights of the kind discussed above and for arguments against widening these rights. Examples of proposals for such infringements are provided from the wider corpus, while the comparative analysis is restricted to the three-country-corpus.

It should be noted that the corpora include several proposals for the infringement of the rights of a particular group, Muslims. They include demands for restrictions in the right to dress in particular ways in different contexts (to wear a veil), as well as restrictions in making Islam visible (building minarets, adhãn). Albeit a cause for concern, these claims are not analysed here, since they are not only directed at migrants but also at longstanding minorities in the countries.
